Ich bin erneut vom Verlag kontaktiert worden, und man hat mir freundlicherweise eine weitere Neuerscheinung zum Probelesen zugeschickt (vielen lieben Dank dafür an dieser Stelle!): Hello Zakka von Hello Sandwich.
Does anyone remember the craft book I reviewed a few months ago? The lovely people at the publishing house contacted me again, and were kind enough to send me another new release to review (so thank you guys!): It’s the book by Hello Sandwich, Hello Zakka.
Hello Sandwich ist manchen von euch vielleicht ein Begriff: Dabei handelt es sich um einen Bastelblog einer Australierin, die in Tokio lebt. Sie bloggt über das Leben in Japan, aber auch über ihre kreativen Projekte und, sehr sympathisch, über ihre Liebe zu Washi Tape 😉
Now obviously this is the german edition; I’m not entirely sure if the book has also been translated into other languages (the original release is in Japanese), but I suppose a quick google search should enlighten you on the subject 😉 You might know Hello Sandwich from the homonymous blog of an Australian crafter and artist living in Tokyo. She blogs about living in Japan, about her crafty endeavors and, a girl after my own heart, her love for washi tape 😉
Aber jetzt mal zum Buch selbst: Nach einer Einleitung und einer ziemlich ausführlichen, vierseitigen Aufstellung des “Grundwerkzeugs” (also wenn das alles die Essentials sind… vieles davon besitze ich z.B. nicht, und ich hab WIRKLICH viel Bastelmaterial zuhause) folgen die Ideen, jeweils mit einer recht detaillierten, bebilderten Anleitung versehen und in die fünf Kapitel Papeterie, Alles für die Tasche, Lifestyle, Geschenkverpackung und Fotos & Tagebuch aufgeteilt. Zwischendurch gibt es noch ein paar “Geheimtipps”, wo die Autorin verrät, wie sie Regentage verbringt, was sie am liebsten in Tokio macht und wo sie ihr Material herbekommt.
Now to the book itself, however: Following a brief introduction and a not so brief, four page inventory of basic tools and materials (I’m not so sure if all of these are actually basic, though: I do not own some of them, and I have A LOT of craft supplies) there are the projects. Each comes with detailed, illustrated instructions; they’re categorized into five chapters (Papercrafts, Everything for the bag, Lifestyle, Gift Wrapping and Memorykeeping). Sprinkled in between are a few insider tips by the author on how to spend rainy days, what to do in Tokyo and where to purchase materials.
Die Ideen an sich sind ganz nett, aber um ehrlich zu sein nicht so außergewöhnlich oder innovativ wie z.B. im Vorgängerband (siehe meine Rezension dazu). Nur wenige Anleitungen hauen mich ob ihrer Kreativität wirklich vom Hocker – was das Besondere ausmacht, ist meiner Ansicht nach eher der spezielle, quietschebunte Hello-Sandwich-Stil, also die spezifische Auswahl und Zusammenstellung von Materialien, Farben und Mustern. Suboptimal finde ich außerdem das Layout auf den Anleitungsseiten: pro Projekt eine Doppelseite, und auf einer Seite ist das Ergebnis nett in Szene gesetzt, während sich auf die andere Seite Materialliste, Anleitung und Schritt-für-Schritt-Fotos zusammenquetschen, sodass die Fotos ein bisschen klein sind für meinen Geschmack.
The actual ideas are alright, but to be quite honest, nothing out of the ordinary. They’re not as creative or innovative as the ones from the first Zakka book (see my previous review), and few of them really sparked my interest. I think what’s special about the projects is that typical Hello Sandwich Style: it’s all very, very bright, and she has a unique way of combining colours, materials and patterns. Also, I feel like the tutorials’ layout is less than ideal: Each two page spread contains one project, and on one of the pages there’s a nice big picture of the finished result, and the list of materials, the written instructions and the step by step photos are all squeezed onto the other page, which means that the tutorial photos turn out a bit small.
Obwohl die Anzahl der Bastelideen insgesamt relativ gering ist (jedenfalls im Vergleich mit dem anderen Zakka-Buch, das wirklich vollgestopft war mit Anleitungen), gibt es ab und zu solche Seiten, wo einfach verschiedene Varianten eines bestimmten Projekts abgebildet sind. Das regt natürlich auch die Kreativität an, und wenn man mit dem Design in der Anleitung nichts anfangen kann, wird man hier sicherlich eine Version finden, die einen eher zum Nachmachen inspiriert.
The total number of individual ideas is relatively small compared to the first Zakka book, which was positively stuffed with ideas. But occasionally there are a few pages which show variations of a specific project, like for example different ways to decorate an envelope or to make a garland. This encourages creativity, and everyone will find an inspring version.
Was ich wirklich gut finde: Ganz hinten sind ein paar bedruckte Seiten, die man heraustrennen und zum Basteln benutzen kann (jedenfalls geh ich davon aus, dass sie dafür gedacht sind). Das ist ein sehr nettes, aufmerksames Extra, das mir sehr gefällt.
What I really like are the last few pages, which are printed in all kinds of patterns and also the paper feels a bit different. I assume these are intended to be removed and to be crafted with, which is a really nice and thoughtful feature I very much appreciate.
Mein Fazit: Hmmmja. Also. Was ich gut finde, sind die Extraseiten am Ende und die Seiten mit der Inspiration bzw. den Variationsmöglichkeiten. Einige der Bastelideen sind auch wirklich nett, und diesen generellen “antiperfektionistischen Vibe”, der durch das Buch und die Autorin rüberkommt, finde ich auch sehr angenehm. Was ich weniger gut finde: die meisten Projekte sind nicht wirklich neu, ich finde wie gesagt die Fotos bei den Anleitungen zu klein, und der allgemeine Stil, in dem das Ganze gehalten ist (sowohl das Design des Buches selber wie auch die Gestaltung der Projekte) ist auch nicht so ganz meins. Ich mag’s ja bunt und niedlich und girlie und so, aber vieles ist mir einfach zu messy, zu unruhig, zuviele Muster und Farben durcheinander und so (Wenn ihr mal auf den Hello Sandwich Blog klickt, versteht ihr vielleicht ganz gut, was ich damit meine). Daher muss ich gestehen: Hätte ich das Buch nicht kostenlos vom Verlag zur Verfügung gestellt bekommen, selber hätte ich es mir nicht gekauft.
My conclusion: Yeah, well. What I like are the extra pages at the end and the variation pages. Some of the projects are quite cute, and I feel like there’s a subliminal message of how your crafting doesn’t have to be perfect or super professional to be pretty, which I appreciate. What I don’t like are the facts that most of the ideas are not exactly new, and that some of the pictures are a little small, and generally the whole style of it all (both the actual book and the projects). It’s just not really my taste – you know I like girly, colourful, cute things, but her style is just a tad too messy, too cluttered, too many colours and patterns all at once. So, my final, very personal verdict is: If I hadn’t gotten the book for free, I probably wouldn’t have bought it for myself.
